What Does the MAZDA3 Check Engine Light Mean?

ABS light. Car dashboard in closeup

Your Mazda3 runs great. Its 186 hp engine provides plenty of power to get through Lee's Summit effortlessly, and the 2019 model was awarded the Women’s World Car of the Year. But even the most reliable cars can experience little blips. Alerts like the check engine light can let you know there might be a problem before it becomes an issue. When the Mazda3 check engine light comes on, what does it mean? It could be one of several things:

  • There is a problem with the engine’s electrical system
  • There is a problem with the emission control system
  • The fuel tank is empty or extremely low
  • The gas cap is missing or not screwed on tightly enough

More Mazda Check Engine Light Tips

If your check engine light is on, here are a couple of things that can help protect your engine and you:

  • Avoid driving at high speeds if the light flashes continuously or stays on for a long time. These signs indicate that you should visit an authorized Mazda dealer service department as soon as possible.
  • You can turn off the illuminated check engine light by disconnecting and then reconnecting the car’s battery. Eddy's Mazda of Lee's Summit technicians do not recommend this as a real solution for Kansas City drivers, since this action may hide old problems or create new problems.

How to Maintain Your Mazda SKYACTIV®-G Engine

With Skyactiv® Technology in turbocharged engines, Mazda models provide strong performance without compromising fuel efficiency. If your Mazda is equipped with one of these engines, like the Skyactiv®-G 2.0T or the Skyactiv®-G 2.5T, there are a few things to keep in mind to avoid Skyactiv®-G engine problems or Skyactiv®-G engine noise on Independence roads.

  • After sustained strain like driving up a long hill, driving at freeway speeds, or towing for a long time, idle the engine for at least 30 seconds before stopping it to avoid damage.
  • Do not race or over-rev the engine, especially right after it’s been started or in extreme cold.
  • Change the engine oil and filter according to the Scheduled Maintenance section of your owners’ manual. Use only the recommended engine oil without extra additives.
